News Release: Smoggy, Toxic Air: Where’s the Mayor?

Toronto – (September 1, 2000)

On Friday, Sept. 1 at 11:00 a.m, Tooker Gomberg and supporters will highlight the poisonous state of Toronto’s air. They will come to the aid of Churchill’s statue at the Southwest corner of Nathan Phillips Square (on Queen Street).

At Toronto’s official “Speaker’s Corner” Mayoral hopeful Tooker Gomberg will get on the soapbox and speak to the current mayor’s lack of action and the tragedy of up to 1,400 Torontonians dying annually from toxic air, according to Toronto Public Health.

“Toronto must declare war on smog. We must fight it in the Beaches, we must fight it on the DVP and on our way to work. We must fight smog in the Bridle Path, and in the streets. We must never surrender!” said Gomberg, (with apologies to Churchill).

“Today a Smog Watch has been issued by the City’s Medical Officer of Health. She has called for all city employees to ‘reduce car use by taking public transit.’ “

“Leadership must come from the top. Is Mayor Lastman driving around today, as usual, in his black Cadillac? If he can’t be bothered to heed the warning of his own Medical Officer of Health, then we don’t have much chance of clearing Toronto’s air ” says candidate Gomberg.

Gomberg will outline the campaign’s Action Plan for solving the smog crisis.
